Noted Litterateur Indira Goswami Passes Away

Eminent litterateur, Jnanpith awardee Indira Goswami passed away in a hospital in Guwahati this morning after prolonged illness. President Pratibha Patil has condoled the sad demise of Indira Goswami.


In her condolence message, President Patil said: " Goswami writings deeply reflected the experience of the people at the grassroots."

Popularly known as "Mamoni Roysom Goswami", Goswami was battling for life at the intensive care unit of the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital for the last nine months.

She is famous for her novels which include 'The Moth Eaten Howdah of a Tusker', 'Pages Stained with Blood', 'The Man from Chinnamasta' and research on Ramayani studies-Ramayana from Ganga to Brahmaputra.

Goswami, 70, is also well known for her attempts to structure social change, both through her writings and through her role as a mediator between the banned ultra outfit- United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the Central Government.
