For the first time, a green corridor was created from Manipal to Mangaluru airport to transport organs of a brain dead fisherman.

Purushotham Naik (30) met with an accident at Bhatkal on March 14. He was rushed to Bhatkal Government Hospital after which he was shifted to Kasturba Hospital in Manipal.

‘The 30-year-old suffered severe head injuries following a road accident. He was declared brain dead, and his family consented to organ donation.’

The organs such as kidneys, liver and the heart valves were harvested. The kidneys will be transplanted to a patient at Manipal, while another kidney will be transplanted to a patient at Yenepoya hospital in Mangaluru.

The organ donation and transplant were initiated by the deputy commissioner of Udupi R Vishal. Udupi SP K Annamalai monitored the arrangements for the "green corridor" with the support of Dakshina Kannada SP Sharanappa SD.

Dr (Col) M Dayananda, the Medical Superintendent and COO, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, said: "We are very pleased to co-ordinate the entire exercise of Organ Donation from a brain dead patient and transplantation to the needy patients which will lead to saving a few lives."
