Stating that private insurance is unaffordable, a new report drafted by the Productivity Commission has suggested that people with severe disability should be given lifelong support and care in Australia.

The report said that the current disability system is unsustainable and lack of funding means that it is struggling to meet the needs of many patients.

The report went on to add that two different no-fault insurance schemes should be set up for those who are born with the disability or for those who suffer it through injuries or illnesses.

More than 360,000 people are expected to be covered under the new schemes which will cost around $12 billion annually to the government. Commenting on the high costs of the disability support, Commissioner John Walsh said that while it was high, the costs are necessary for the country's wealth and economic growth.
