Patient from Kansas City Tests Negative for Ebola After Returning from Sierra Leone
A man hailing from Kansas City was admitted at the University of Kansas Hospital for Ebola and was tested negative for the deadly disease, but positive for Malaria.
He had returned from the West African nation and developed a fever and Ebola like symptoms. When he arrived at the hospital, the staff put him in isolation as a precaution.
Tests from a regional lab showed no Ebola virus, it said. Hospital officials had said they were monitoring the man.
"We are so relived for this young guy," said Dr. Lee Norman of the University of Kansas Hospital. "He's getting better, actually, so I had a hunch that it wasn't going to be Ebola over these last 6 to 8 hours, and it was a relief when it came back from the final testing that it's not Ebola." The patient is responding well to the treatment and is the third patient to be tested for the disease.
More than 11,000 people have lost their lives in the Ebola outbreak in West Africa since the first reported case in March 2014. Very few cases have been seen outside West Africa, in the United States, Spain and Britain.
