People With Type 2 Diabetes Urged to Take Control of Their Condition
A new campaign is urging people with Type 2 diabetes to take control of their condition.
According to the campaigners, around 225,000 people living in Ireland are diabetic, with 90% having Type 2 diabetes.
The number of those with diabetes is steadily increasing and it is expected a quarter of a million people here will suffer from the condition by 2030.
The research, by Diabetes Ireland and Janssen, showed that 70% feel they are in control of their diabetes.
The study states that only half significantly changed their diet, just 35% significantly improved their exercise habits and almost a quarter (23%) forgot to take their diabetes medication at some stage in the previous month and 1 in 20 do this at least once a week.
Proper treatment is essential to prevent complications, says Dr Anna Clarke, health promotion manager with Diabetes Ireland.
"Type 2 diabetes is like a silent condition; it's going on in the background - you may not know you're causing damage to your blood vessels. And unfortunately that can come back and kick you, in the form of the complications that can develop," she said.
