Petition for Dye-free Version of Mac & Cheese from Kraft

by Savitha C Muppala on March 9, 2013 at 11:24 PM

An online petition has been signed by more than 60,000 people for Kraft which offers dye-free version of its mac & cheese product in the U.K. The petition questions the company's objective of offering dye free version in the UK.

The U.S. version of the well-known convenience food contains two additives which have been done away with from its European counterpart due to stricter food safety rules.

This has led Americans to wonder why they are not getting the same kind of protection and this online petition is in support of a change, requesting consumer food giant Kraft to ensure the same additive-free mac & cheese is available in America too.

The additives in question are yellow dye 5 and yellow dye 6 which are both legal and have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Countries like Austria and Norway have banned the additive since it serves only an aesthetic purpose.

A research conducted by the Center for Science in Public Interest has found two food dyes which can cause hyperactivity in children, allergies and migraine.

Kraft has "already formulated a safer version and we deserve the same in the U.S." says Leake, who writes the blog 100 Days of Real Food. "These additives provide no value to the foods, but they do pose risks."

Kraft spokesperson Lynne Galia said in a statement, "The safety and quality of our products is our highest priority and we take consumer concerns very seriously. We carefully follow the laws and regulations in the countries where our products are sold. So in the U.S., we only use colors that are approved and deemed safe for food use by the Food and Drug Administration."
