The latest World Health Organization data indicates that India has been successful in fighting polio. Just 39 cases of the disease have been reported so far in this year compared to 498 at the same time last year, figures reveal.

"Through our immunisation drives, we have ensured that 98 per cent of children in the western parts of the state were covered in each round," WHO's UP coordinator SK Pathyarch said. "Migrant labourers moving in various parts of the state were also tracked and their children were administered the vaccine."

Polio, which is a devastating neurological disease is still prevalent in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. In India, Bihar and UP have been the most affected, but latest data reveals that the country may finally be on the way to beat polio.

September-October is the peak transmission season and last year 216 cases were reported during these months.
