A survey has revealed that fifty-three percent of Americans have supported for the first time a move to make gay marriage legal.

The latest Gallup poll found growing support for legalising gay marriages, Fox News reports.

Among Democrats and political independents who were surveyed last year, 44 percent favoured gay marriage, while 53 percent opposed it.

The percentage of Republicans favouring same-sex matrimony held steady at 28 percent.

Despite being a controversial issue, homosexual couples have won the right to legally wed in five states - Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Iowa. The District of Columbia has also approved same-sex marriage.

"The trend toward marriage equality is undeniable-and irreversible," Joe Solmonese, president of the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement.eanwhile, National Organization for Marriage's chairman, Maggie Gallagher has said the poll shows her fellow opponents of gay matrimony have been "shamed" into silence.
