Pregnant Workers Irked by Discrimination
A new report on pregnant women working in not-so-well paid jobs has brought out the discrimination they face at the workplace.
The study found that they are denied basic accommodation and also constantly face the risk of being fired.
A report by the National Women's Law Center and A Better Balance' says that pregnant women are deprived of basic accommodation offered to other employees with disabilities, even though there are federal laws preventing such discrimination.
People who earn very less are vulnerable because they are likely to have more physically demanding jobs, says Emily Martin, vice president and lawyer for the center.
It appears that federal laws are not taken into consideration at all or not being understood and the report has recommended that state legislation must provide additional protection for pregnant workers. Laws that specifically provide accommodations to pregnant workers are followed only by eight states, the report has revealed.
