Living With Diabetes, Professional Cyclist Joe Eldridge Speaks Before a Race Fights Type 1 Diabetes With Cycling, Diet, Insulin
Joe Eldridge is a Type 1 diabetic but turned into a professional cyclist after he learned to manage diabetes. He was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 10 but churned his lifestyle with proper diet, insulin and regular exercise.
He will be a pre-race motivational speaker before the D-Feet Diabetes 5K Walk/Run and 1 Mile Walk organized by OhioHealth MedCentral Hospitals. Eldridge will speak at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 at Ontario High School. The event is free and open to the public. The fourth annual event will be held on April 26, Sunday, at 2 p.m. Race day registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. Registration is $20.
Eldridge is a part of Team Novo Nordisk, comprised of cyclists, triathletes and runners who are living with diabetes. The team will race with Birmingham, Alabama, native racers.
The triathlon journey began when Eldridge's brother, challenged him to train for a triathlon. He accepted the challenge and soon began to enjoy cycling. Later, he began racing competitively and became a part of Team Novo Nordisk pro cycling team. Eldridge aims to win national championships in America with his ultimate dream to race in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
