Prosthesis from Vanderbilt Helps Amputees Walk Faster

Engineers at Vanderbilt University have come up with a "bionic" above knee prosthesis which is a blessing for amputees in enabling fast movement.

The prosthesis comes with a powered knee, ankle and a microprocessor which helps in coordinating functions.

The other unique aspect of this device is the �anti-stumble' mechanism, which helps the amputee regain balance when it senses that the user is about to fall.

This device is light and helps amputees walk 25% faster. The energy used is also 30-40% less as compared to traditional devices. The device also makes the actions of sitting, standing, going up/down stairs and ramps easier.
