British consumer goods company Reckitt Benckiser has revealed that it has recalled more than 250,000 packets of popular painkiller drug, Nurofen Plus and said that it suspects that the packets had been sabotaged.

The company said that it halted the production of the drug after it found that five boxes of the drug contained drugs manufactured by other companies including an antipsychotic drug.

The Metropolitan Police will be investigating the sabotage and the company said that it suspects that more than 250,000 such packets had been tampered with.

The medical director for Nurofen Plus, Dr Aomesh Bhatt asked the consumers to return any packages of the drug. "We are taking this matter extremely seriously and have decided to recall all packs of Nurofen Plus as the most prudent course of action in the current circumstances. We're asking consumers to return any packs of Nurofen Plus to a pharmacy. No other Nurofen products are affected or being recalled", he said.
