Reducing Salt Intake Helps Reduce Stomach Cancer Risk

by Kathy Jones on July 23, 2012 at 9:07 PM

More than 14 percent of stomach cancer cases can be reduced by cutting down on the salt intake, a new report released by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) reveals.

According to the report, nearly 800 new cases of stomach cancer could be avoided every year in the UK if people stick to the maximum recommended daily limit of 6g of salt intake. The report also said that food labeling should be done more clearly to help people monitor their daily intake of salt, sugar and fat content.

"Stomach cancer is difficult to treat successfully because most cases are not caught until the disease is well-established. This places even greater emphasis on making lifestyle choices to prevent the disease occurring in the first place - such as cutting down on salt intake and eating more fruit and vegetables", WCRF's Kate Mendoza said.
