A new report commissioned by the Department of Health has revealed that over five patients of dementia die every day in Britain due to strokes that may have been triggered by antipsychotic drugs used to keep the patients sedated.

The Dementia Commissioning Pack was unveiled by the Department of Health on Thursday which revealed that patients are being given drugs that they do not need and can increase the risk of various health problems.

The government hopes that the pack will now help doctors to increase the quality of the service provided to dementia patients.

"Evidence tells us that although there are clinical situations where a time-limited prescription of antipsychotic drugs may be appropriate, antipsychotic drugs are often overprescribed and continued when alternative therapies are more beneficial", the report said.
