Reports of Inmate Abuse Leads to Arrest of Prison Staff in Israel
Reports of inmate abuse, both physical and sexual, at a private mental health center in Petach Tikva city has led to the arrests of more than 70 employees in Israel.
Former employees at the Neve Ya'akov facility in Petach Tikva, a city 10 kms away from Tel Aviv, had tipped the health ministry regarding various physical and sexual abuses inflicted on the inmates of the facility.
Following the report from the ministry, the police conducted an year-long investigation into the facility, including accessing footage from its surveillance cameras and computers as evidence before a team of 150 policemen raided the facility, arresting the employees. "We began to suspect that there were a number of workers who were abusing patients, while others knew and did nothing to stop them", police chief superintendent Sigal Bar-Zvi said.
