Researchers Report Pregnancy from Ovarian Tissue Grown Outside Pelvis

by Kathy Jones on September 3, 2013 at 9:16 PM

Researchers in Australia have claimed that they have managed to achieve a pregnancy from an ovarian tissue that had been grown outside the pelvis.

Vali, 23, had stored her ovarian tissue with Melbourne IVF before undergoing cancer treatment. Seven years later, the researchers managed to graft the tissue back to her abdominal wall and after her eggs successfully grew, they were harvested for IVF treatment and then placed back into her uterus, with Vali now 25 weeks pregnant.

Stating that their procedure could now allow thousands of women who receive cancer treatment to conceive, Associate Professor Kate Stern said, "We have proven that ovarian tissue can still work and function normally outside the pelvis, which is its natural environment."
