Royal Mail Service Suspended in Chippenham Over Flea Concerns

by Kathy Jones on October 12, 2012 at 8:08 PM

The Royal Mail service in Britain has announced that it will not be delivering any mail to a street in Chippenham, Wiltshire, until the residents make sure that their street is cleared of any fleas or ticks.

The announcement comes after a postman was bitten all over his arms and legs by fleas and the residents of the 13 homes on Queen's Crescent street have been asked to collect their post from the delivery office Bumpers Way.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman has apologized for the inconvenience caused to the residents but added that the health and safety of the postmen was also important.

In a letter to the street's residents, the delivery office manager Paul Gibbons said, "This is now causing us concern and in turn causing the suspension of the service. This exceptional step has to be taken in order to guard the health and safety of Royal Mail employees. Royal Mail has carried out its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding this health and safety hazard. We will also consider whilst completing the risk assessment what steps need to be taken to ensure employee safety before we can restore mail deliveries to your address."
