Running Away to Avoid Chemo

by Savitha C Muppala on November 29, 2013 at 12:35 AM

The family of a ten-year-old girl from Ohio, battling leukemia, have left their home to escape chemotherapy treatments.

According to the family's attorney, this decision to stop the chemotherapy treatment on Sarah, was taken by the family as it was making her really unwell. The family has been fighting a hospital in court for months to allow them permission to stop chemotherapy.

They fled their home before the court could take matters into its own hands and force the treatment on their child.

Doctors at Akron Children's Hospital are of the opinion that Sarah's leukemia, lymphoblastic lymphoma, can be treated. The hospital took the matter to court after the family was adamant to halt chemotherapy. They wished to treat Sarah with alternative medicines like herbs and vitamins.

Hospital officials have communicated that they are bound by moral and legal obligations to ensure that the girl receives proper care. They are of the opinion that if Sarah avails treatment for lymphoblastic lymphoma, there is a good chance of survival.
