Singapore Suffocating Under Thick Smoke Screen: NASA

by Rukmani Krishnaon June 25, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Eye-catching images of smoke rising up from illegal wildfires on the Indonesian island of Sumatra were captured by NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites.

Thick clouds of haze had descended on Singapore as farmers in Sumatra often burn forests during the dry season to prepare soil for new crops.

News media has reported that this smoke has pushed pollution to record levels above 300 PSI (Pollution Standards Index) which is hazardous to human health according to the health experts.

BBC reported that Singapore's Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong warned that the haze could easily last for several weeks until the dry season ends in Sumatra.
