Six in 10 men admit that they are "punching above their weight" as their other half have better looks than they have, reveals a new survey. While most men feel inferior to their wives or girlfriends in looks, only one in four women believe their partner is better off in that way.

The study of 2,000 adults found that most men preferred their partner to be more attractive since it boosted their self-esteem, with a third saying the most important thing was to make other men envious, Daily Mail reported.

It also revealed what men saw, as the key attributes that helped them to land a better-looking partner, with being funny, a good listener and having good manners all deemed crucial.

The research, for the Celebalike app, found getting on well with women, sensitivity and a good smile were also in the top 20.

Twenty percent of the men thought having a more attractive partner made them more appealing to other women.

Many of the elements men said led them to success were personality-based, like the ability to be funny, show intelligence and make good conversation.

The research also found being articulate, smooth-talking, good in bed and well- travelled as boosting men's confidence. Cooking skills, having money and smelling good were cited among men's tips for attracting the other sex, as were dancing skills, chat-up lines and having great hair.
