Slim Individuals Have Better Capacity to Fight Gum Disease Than Obese Counterparts

Yet another reason to ditch that excess weight has been provided by researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, who suggest that slim people put up a better fight against gum disease compared to their obese counterparts.
The researchers said slim people have a lower number of fat cells which trigger the inflammation that leads to gum disease. A small scale study was conducted involving 31 obese people who were suffering from gum disease.
Half of the volunteers underwent gastric bypass surgery and reduced the number of fat cells in their body. The researchers found that this group gave a better fight against gum disease compared to the other half who had a greater count of fat cells.
The study has been published in the Journal of Periodontology.
