Two studies presented at the International Congress on Obesity in Stockholm, Sweden, have said that food supplements to help lose weight are of no use.

Over-the-counter slimming supplements are being used in high numbers these days, but the studies said there was no difference between them and placebos.

Sian Porter, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association said the studies showed that it was important to exercise and eat in a healthy manner instead of taking supplements.

"It's important that those who are overweight learn how to manage food and drink intake and re-educate themselves about healthy eating rather than relying on a short fix substitute," she added.

The supplements tried out in the study included cabbage, fibre and plant extracts
