Smoking In Car With Below 18-Years-Old Will Be Banned In The UK From October 1

by Shirley Johanna on September 26, 2015 at 4:52 PM

Smoking in a car with anyone under the age of 18 will be illegal in the UK from October 1. The law is changed to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke.

When a child breathes in secondhand smoke, thousands of chemicals enter the body that puts them at risk of serious conditions including meningitis, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia.

A penalty of 50 could be fined for each offence. Both driver and smoker could be fined, including those aged 17 with a provisional driving license.

The law is applicable only for private vehicles that is enclosed wholly or partly by a roof. The law does not apply to a convertible car with the roof down completely.

However it does not apply if the driver is 17 years old and is on their own in the car.

It will also be illegal for retailers to sell electronic cigarettes or e-liquids to someone under the age of 18.
