A study by the Denver-based International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer has stated that a component in soybeans increases the ability of radiation to kill lung cancer cells.

Soy isoflavones (genistein, daidzein and glycitein) have the potential to sensitize cancer cells to the effects of radiotherapy. Soy isoflavones also act as antioxidants in normal tissues, which help to protect the healthy cells against unintended damage due to the radiotherapy.

The study appears in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
