Special Committee Gives A Clean Chit To AIIMS Doctors Accused of 'Stealing Kidney'

Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) were given a clean chit after they were accused of �stealing the kidney' of a young patient, by the patient's father.

A committee formed at AIIMS after a four-year-old girl's father alleged his daughter's kidney had gone "missing" after a surgery reviewed radiological images and pathology findings taken before the surgery.

The committee headed by Dr V. Bhatnagar, Head of pediatric surgery at AIIMS, observed that this was a "rare case of congenital fusion anomaly of bilateral kidneys. The huge enlargement of left kidney displaced the right kidney towards the right side and hence on all pre-operative imaging it appeared as a normal right kidney. However, further investigation showed that there was no right kidney."

Two external experts, one each from PGI Chandigarh and JIPMER, Pondicherry - observed that "based on the preoperative protocols followed by AIIMS, the committee is of the opinion that standard protocols were not breached".

The committee submitted a report and it noted, "This is a rare case of congenital fusion anomaly of bilateral kidneys."
