Starchy Foods Increase Risk of Breast Cancer
Another reason to avoid the carbs- increased carbohydrate intake was associated with a higher rate of breast cancer.
Starchy foods (potatoes, bread, rice) may increase the risk of breast cancer, according to US researchers.
When scientists at the University of California studied the diets of 2,651 breast cancer survivors, focusing on carbohydrates, they found that carbohydrates in general, and especially starches, were linked to the risk of new tumors. Women who increased their carbohydrate intake by 2.3gm per day had a 14.2% higher risk of tumor recurrence, while the recurrence rate was 9.7% among women who decreased their carbohydrate consumption by 2.7gm. Starches accounted for 48% of the carbohydrate intake change.
The findings were presented at the CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in Texas.
