by Kathy Jones on April 24, 2012 at 9:44 PM

The Hough Memorial Lecture entitled "Pitch Counts: Can we prevent youth throwing injuries" was delivered by Tracy R. Ray, MD.

The lecture was delivered at the 21st American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday, April 21, 2012.

"Strategies for injury prevention to young throwers are important to most parents with children involved in throwing sports and to the sports medicine community," said Dr. Ray. "If more fully understood and implemented, these strategies would have a significant impact on the throwing careers of many young athletes."

The Hough Memorial Lecture is given each year to honor Dr. David Hough who was one of the original founders of AMSSM. His career from 1978 to his untimely death in 1996 was filled with the orderly development of Sports Medicine as a discipline. He was considered a fine teacher, role model and leader at Michigan State University.

The AMSSM conference features lectures and research addressing the most challenging topics in sports medicine today including prevention of sudden death, cardiovascular issues in athletes, concussion, biologic therapies, and other controversies facing the field of sports medicine.

More than 1,200 sports medicine physicians from across the United States and 12 countries throughout the world are attending the meeting.

Dr. Ray serves as director of the Medical Aspects of Sports/Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. He also serves as team physician for Samford University and Briarwood Christian School.

AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of sports medicine physicians whose members are dedicated to education, research, advocacy, and the care of athletes of all ages. Founded in 1991, the AMSSM is now comprised of more than 2,000 sports medicine physicians whose goal is to provide a link between the rapidly expanding core of knowledge related to sports medicine and its application to patients in a clinical setting.
