The Stroke Treatment Fund has been set up by popular Indian actress, Rani Mukherjee together with the Indian Stroke Association (ISA).
The fund has been set up to enable offering free treatment to 25 stroke patients who cannot afford the expense involved. Mukherjee claims a personal interest in this project since she had lost two of her family members due to a stroke attack.
The World Stroke Organization reports that someone dies of a stroke in the world every six seconds. In India the figure is very high with 14 lakh people developing an acute ischemic stroke every year. Awareness of stroke symptoms is abysmally low because research indicates that only 6.2 percent pf the patients could identify the symptoms of stroke and only 10 percent of the 3,800 people who suffer from an attack daily across the country reach help on time within the period of three to four- and-half hours.
'Acute Stroke Treatment Centres' need to be identified and then endorsed by the ISA only if they are equipped with the basic levels of skill-sets and technologies required to treat stroke.
"It is a privilege to support ISA to create awareness, diagnosis and appropriate management of the condition," Mukjerjee says in appreciation.
