A new report published in the New York Times Sunday magazine has suggested that sugar can prove to be as toxic as alcohol or cigarettes.

University of California's Dr Robert Lustig said that while obesity is the most knowledgeable problem related to sugar, it also causes a number of other harmful diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease and termed sugar as being a "poison".

According to Dr Lustig, when the effect of sugar was tested on mice, he found that excess of sugar was converted into fat and increases insulin resistance, which indirectly increases the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
