Support Group Helps People With Alzheimer's in Effingham County, Illinois

by Shirley Johanna on April 4, 2015 at 7:42 PM

Alzheimer's Support Group in the Effingham County, Illinois, was started by Shannon Nosbisch and her daughter Amy, for area families who may be affected by Alzheimer's, whether as a victim, family member or caregiver.

Nosbisch, said, "There just wasn't any resources for caregivers. We didn't understand how the disease worked. I wish I knew several years ago what I knew now."

Nosbisch wants her area people to have access to the resources that she and other family members had trouble finding while caring for her mother-in-law, who suffered the disease for 12 years before her death.

"We're trying to help caregivers and people with Alzheimer's get the information they need to know. We know how difficult it is to get the information needed to deal with this disease."

Amy Nosbisch, a social worker who specializes in gerontology works in the St. Louis metropolitan area, said she wants to represent the Alzheimer's support group in Effingham area to the same level as in metropolitan areas.

Mike Bius of the Greater Illinois Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association said the services related to Alzheimers have increased significantly given to the expected growth of the disease.
