Researchers at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg have made a discovery that could make womb transplants a reality.

Sweden's Sydsvenskan daily newspaper reported that the researchers made a breakthrough in rats in a study investigating womb transplants.

The rats that received the womb transplants went on to get pregnant and also give birth to offspring that had no issues at all. The new procedure will now be tried on baboons in final animal tests before human trials begin.

"There is an alternative to surrogacy or adoption," said researcher Lisa Johannesson, adding that the procedure may help women unable to beget children.
