Surgeons have successfully separated conjoined twins at a hospital in Switzerland making them be the youngest and smallest twins separated in the world.

The eight-day-old conjoined twins Lydia and Maya were born eight months prematurely at the Inselspital hospital in Bern. Along with them, another baby was also born who was separated and healthy.

‘Eight-day-old premature twins, conjoined at the liver have made history after their successful separation by doctors in Switzerland.’

The twins weighed just 2.2 kg and were joined on the liver. The babies had a serious problem, where one was suffering from serious blood pressure due to increased blood flow from the liver. While the other did not receive enough blood and had low blood pressure.

A team of 13 doctors took five hours to separate the twins, as it was very complex with one percent of survival chances. The babies are recovering well at the hospital. They have gained weight and have started to breastfeed.
