Postmenopausal women could improve their bone health by regularly practicing Tai chi and drinking green tea, a new study conducted by researchers at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center reveals.

More than 170 postmenopausal women with an average age of 57 years took part in the 6 month long study. The volunteers were divided into four different groups.

The first group was given just a placebo pill, the second practiced Tai chi three times a week and also took a placebo pill; the third group drank green tea every day while the fourth group drank green tea and also practiced Tai chi.

The researchers found that while the two groups that independently practiced Tai chi and drank green tea showed some improvement in their bone health, the participants in the fourth group not only displayed improved bone health, but also reduced oxidative stress which is a precursor to inflammatory diseases.

The study was presented as a poster at the 2011 Experimental Biology meeting.
