by Kathy Jones on April 15, 2014 at 10:30 PM

A 15-year old has developed a new smartphone case that can turn your handsets into a stethoscope.

Known as the Steth IO, the device will not only help doctors to record and listen to the auscultations but also to visualize the audio signal. The device has been developed by Suman Mulumudi who made use of MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer and features a diaphragm connected to a tube through which sound is channelled to the microphone which allows it to pick up low frequency sounds that would not have been possible by the microphone on iyts own..

Mulumudi has set up a new company, called StratoScientific, to commercially manufacture the device and has plans to seek regulatory approval from the US Food and Drug Administration.
