Thiruvananthapuram Organizes Fair To Promote Organic Rice

by VR Sreeraman on July 8, 2012 at 1:11 PM

Thiruvananthapuram organized a fair recently with an aim to promote organic and conventional varieties of rice.

The event was organized by a non-profit organization, Thanal, and showcased eighteen different varieties of rice, including anti-diabetic ones.

Speaking to ANI on Friday, Usha, one of the organizers of the event, said, "Basically the idea is to promote organic rice in the city. Not only organic rice, but also the traditional varieties of rice are getting lost day by day."

Farmers said that using local seeds for cultivation was profitable for them and cheaper in the long run.

"We have started agriculture farming for the past two years and we have paddy fields. We use local seeds because of which we are getting some good profit. Another advantage is that these local seeds don't need chemicals, so they are quite inexpensive in the end," Imtiaz, a farmer, said.

As part of the exhibition, film shows will be conducted at the Thiruvananthapuram Young Men Christian Association hall.
