UK Man Gets Prosthetic Arm

by Bidita Debnath on November 8, 2012 at 10:49 PM

In Royston, Cambridgeshire, a man has been fitted with a Terminator-like carbon fibre mechanical hand that can be controlled by his upper arm movements.

The new Bebionic 3 Myoelectric hand, which has aluminium and alloy knuckles, moves like a real human hand by responding to Nigel Ackland's muscle twitches, the Telegraph reported.

The sensors detect muscles twitches in his upper arm and trigger one of 14 pre-programmed grips to mirror human movements.

The different grip patterns comprise of a clenched fist, a pointed finger and a pincer and a lighter and heavier according to how Ackland tenses his upper arm.

The arm is so sensitive that Ackland can even touch type on a computer keyboard, peel vegetables and even dress himself for the first time in six years.

Ackland lost his arm when it was caught in an industrial blending machine at the Johnson Matthey smelting plant in 2006.

He is one of just seven people in the world to be given the arm by Leeds-based prosthetics company, RSLSteeper, as part of their four-month trial.
