Victorian age recipe, toast sandwich, which consists of a slice of toast between two slices of bread and butter, and some pepper and salt for taste is UK's cheapest meal, according to the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The meal costs 7.5 pence and was first promoted by Victorian food writer Mrs Beeton.
The toast sandwich provides about 330 calories. The recipe has been picked up from Mrs. Beeton's Book of Household Management. The book turned out to be a best-seller 150 years ago and this recipe was created to mark its anniversary coming next month.
The society has declared to offer 200 pounds to anyone who can create a cheaper alternative.
