In an attempt to reduce the incidence of unplanned pregnancies and abortions under-age girls can get the morning-after pill from high street chemists in Wales. This emergency contraceptive pill will be given out over the counter to girls younger than 16-years if pharmacists believe it is clinically appropriate'.
This is an initiative to make available professional advice and services without appointment for women and young girls within 72-hours after sex when emergency contraception is most effective. This service has already come into effect in Scotland and in many parts of England and soon it will be available across 700 chemists in Wales. The emergency contraceptive pill is available free of cost from GP surgeries and sexual health clinics across Britain and in pharmacies in Scotland. Rest of the places it costs about 25pounds.
Some feel that this move will encourage casual and irresponsible behavior while some feel that it will help to curb the numbers of teenage pregnancies and abortions.
