The state government of Calcutta planned to upgrade the Capital Hospital to a postgraduate institute and has decided to allot Rs 228.49 crore on the project.

Health minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, said, "The state government has decided in principle to convert the Capital Hospital into a postgraduate institution. The government has already accorded administrative approval to a Rs 82.06 crore proposal for infrastructure upgrade of the hospital."

Special secretary for health, Nalinikanta Das, said, the state government from its own resource would build the institute where four PG seats each in medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, community medicine, anaesthesiology and orthopaedics and two each in radiology and pathology would be available in the first phase.

Construction of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences and Research will begin shortly on the campus of Capital Hospital. The project is likely to be finished within five years from the date of commencement of the work.

A study by the health and family welfare department in 2013 had found that the daily inflow of indoor patients at the hospital with only 60 beds would be around 240 by 2020. The medical facility would be catering to the health care needs of nearly one lakh indoor and 14 lakh outdoor patients by then in a year.

Director of the hospital Biswa Bandhu Patnaik said, "Patients, specially those who are coning from faraway places such as Nayagarh, Puri and Ganjam, can benefit from the expansion."
