Websites in China Ordered to Screen Out Violent and Pornographic Content

by Kathy Jones on July 15, 2012 at 8:46 PM

China has announced strict online censorship rules, directing websites operating in the country to pre-screen violence and pornography content before making it available online.

According to the BBC, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) said that site administrators should censor 'violence, pornography and some swearing' content.

It said state officials would offer guidance, but did not give specifics.

SARFT said that the new regulations were a response to the rapid growth in online programmes.

It said 'netizens' had urged it to take action to protect young people's mental health, adding that the move should promote high-quality content.

China has already blocked many overseas video sites, including YouTube.
