West Bengal Corpse Case: Man Claims Illegal Detention at Mental Hospital

A 44-year-old man, Partha De, who lived with his sister's corpse for months, said that he was being illegally kept at a mental hospital in West Bengal and that he has not committed any crime.

Partha is currently undergoing treatment at the Calcutta Pavlov Hospital, and has said he wants to go to the Missionaries of Charity and donate his properties.

"I have been kept here illegally and without my consent. It is illegal to keep me here. I have committed no crime," the former techie told media persons at the hospital premises.

"I want to go to the Mother's house, I have lot of property, I want to donate," he said.

Police on June 10 stumbled upon the maggot-infested skeletons of Debjani De and two dogs while investigating the death of her father Arabinda De, the owner of the house whose burnt body was found inside a bathroom.

While the police have pressed no formal charges against him, they are likely to question Partha during the day.

Partha said his sister was into religious fasting that led to her death and his father came to know about the death only in March, three months after her death.

"She was very religious and did religious fasting which led to her death. I used to feel very bad, but it was a religious fasting. My father came to know about Debjani's death somewhere near March 13," said Partha who earlier told the police that his sister died in December last year.

Hospital Superintendent Ganesh Prasad said that they have decided to approach the Mother Teresa-founded Missionaries of Charity following repeated pleas by Partha to interact with them.
