WHO Efforts Insufficient to Contain Ebola Virus

by Dr. Trupti Shirole on December 11, 2014 at 7:37 AM

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the deadly Ebola virus is still continuing to spread and the global health watchdog's efforts are proving insufficient to contain it.

The death toll in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone from Ebola is estimated to be around 6,331. WHO's figures reveal that more than 17,800 people have been infected with the Ebola virus.

BBC Director General Margaret Chan said, "The situation had improved in some parts of the worst-affected countries, but she warned against complacency. With the continuing outbreak of the killer virus, the risk to the world is always there."

Chan reported that Liberia was seeing some good progress, especially in Lofa county and the capital. However, she added that while cases in Guinea and Sierra Leone were less severe than few months ago, a large number of Ebola cases were still being reported.
