Wimbledon Drenched With Strawberry, Cream And Champagne

by Nancy Needhima on July 9, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Reigning favourites with the Wimbledon crowd are still strawberry and cream. About 450,000 people who have entered the gates since the tournament began have by now consumed more than 28,000 kilograms.

Even champagne sales during the Wimbledon have seen a steep rise with popular grocery chain Sainsbury's expecting to sell 500,000 punnets of strawberries, more than a million pots of cream and 240,000 bottles of bubbly.

Another famous grocery chain ASDA has claimed this will be the biggest weekend for strawberry sales with customers buying 600,000 punnets, which equates to 150 million berries.

"Whenever there are major sporting events sales tend to soar. We predict that the Wimbledon final will see even higher demand this year," The Daily Mirror quoted an ASDA spokesman, as saying.

Supermarkets were expecting rocketing sales of strawberries and cream, snacks and drinks for armchair fans' parties.

Local hero Andy Murray would take on six-times champion Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final on the Centre Court on Sunday.
