Indian Woman in New Delhi Commits Suicide Allegedly Due to Dowry Harassment

by Mansi Shroffon April 28, 2015 at 6:21 PM

A 29-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in West Delhi, in front of her five-year-old son, possibly over dowry harassment. The incident was reported on Sunday afternoon when Harpreet Kaur, 29, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her house.

"Harpreet's neighbor found her hanging and made a call to police. Her son was in the room when she hanged herself. She was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival," a police official said. She lived with her husband Parminder Singh, a software engineer, and a five-year-old son.

Police have detained Harpreet's husband as Harpreet's family members accused him of harassing her for dowry. A probe by a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) is on in the case. "The couple had frequent fights in the last six months and the matter was once reported to the police station as well," said the officer, adding that a case of dowry harassment has been registered in connection with the suicide.
