Woman Badly Injured After Getting Stuck in MRI Machine
A 34-year-old woman was injured while undergoing an Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan at a hospital in Raipur (capital city of the state of Chhattisgarh in India) when an iron stretcher kept inside the MRI unit hit her due to alleged negligence of doctors and radiographers.
Director of Medical Education and Commissioner Health Services, Pratap Singh, told PTI that two doctors and as many radiographers at the Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Hospital have been suspended immediately following a preliminary inquiry.
The incident occurred last Monday when the woman was being taken out of the MRI machine and during the process, an iron stretcher kept inside the room was pulled in towards the machine due to heavy magnetic field around the machine, injuring the patient's head, Pratap Singh said.
A native of Mungeli district in Chhattisgarh, Ramkumari was admitted in the hospital with serious spinal cord and abdomen injuries a month ago.
According to the sources, medical staff in the MRI unit had asked family members to take out the patient from the MRI machine and shift her to the ward without informing them about use of objects near the machine.
They added that only plastic or wooden stretchers are allowed inside MRI Unit and medical staff negligently left the patient there without properly attending her. Soon after the accident the woman was shifted to critical care unit and received stitches on her head.
