Woman Speaks in British Accent After Oral Surgery

by Savitha C Muppala on May 6, 2011 at 11:48 PM

A 56-year-old woman from Newport, Oregon, began to speak with a different accent after she underwent an oral surgery. She woke up from sedation and spoke with a British accent.

This condition is medically termed as foreign accent syndrome. It is an extremely rare speech disorder mostly caused due to injury to the left hemisphere of the brain, the region associated with language.

Many victims of stroke suffer this condition. Any injury to the head can also trigger foreign accent syndrome.
