Woman With Down Syndrome Is Inspiring People In Mumbai
Twenty-three years ago, when Aditi was born, her parents were devastated to learn that she has Down syndrome. When she was two-and-a-half years old, she was diagnosed with a hole in her heart and had to undergo surgery.
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes intellectual disability, developmental delays and gives it patients a distinct facial appearance. Caused due to abnormal cell division, it also results in thyroid and heart problems. It can be managed but never cured.
‘From preparing orders, taking client calls to managing accounts, the 23-year-old runs the show at Aditi's Corner. Despite working for eight hours every day, she never misses a chance to greet her customers.’
"I would keep crying looking at her, wondering if we will be able to give her the kind of life she deserves," her mother Rina says. One day, her husband Amit and she decided to take this up as a challenge. There has been no looking back since then.
Around two years ago, Aditi opened her restaurant in Navi Mumbai, named after her, called Aditi's Corner. Aditi has been running her cafe at Bhoomi Mall and has already gathered a loyal group of customers who visit her cafe quite often. Inaugurated on January 1, 2016, it started out as a small cafe selling tea/coffee, soup, maggi, egg preparations and sandwiches.
Every time Aditi picks up her phone, the first thing she asks is, "Hello, how are you?" From preparing orders, taking client calls to managing accounts, she runs the show at Aditi's Corner. Aditi reportedly works eight hours every day. The cafe was gifted to her by her parents who wanted to see her financially independent and engaged in meaningful work.
