You Probably Watch TV in Bed If You are Sent Home Sick from Work

Researchers suggest that people who have televisions in their bedrooms are more likely to be sent home from work due to sleep deprivation issues.

The new study by CQ University and Sealy measured people's use of gadgets like mobile phones and tablets online, News.com.au reported.

The researchers polled more than 13,000 people around the country and found that 98 percent of Australians take some form of technology to bed with them.

18 to 34-year-olds were the most likely to use a device in the bedroom, followed closely by teenagers aged 17 and under.

Tasmania took out the top spot with 58.7 percent of respondents admitting to owning a TV in the bedroom. Victorians and the ACT took out second place with 51.3 percent respectively, followed by Queenslanders with 45.9 percent.

New South Wales had one of the lowest rates, with 46.3 percent of people having a TV in the bedroom.

According to chair of the sleep health foundation, Dr. David Hillman, devices like televisions and mobile phones can cause psychological and physiological problems.

He said studies have shown that children and teens, who have televisions in their bedrooms or who watch a lot of television or play video games or use mobile devices at night, are more likely to have sleep problems that are perpetuated into adulthood.

The sleep physician also said that there is a connection between poor sleep and obesity which is not properly being addressed in national health outcomes.

Fatigue can cause hunger because when you're tired your leptin levels - a hormone which tells you when you're full or not - increases, making you hungry and therefore more likely to snack late at night.
