With the monsoon season in full swing most families in India will contemplate buying a water purifier to avoid the dark muddy water that is supplied from corporations.

However experts feel this market is not that well regulated in India and that the water purifiers may not be all that safe. Consumer expert Bejon Mishra voiced his concerns to the Indian Express by saying that in India there is mechanism for ensuring safety of potable water purification device.

This is true even as manufacturers of packaged drinking water have to meet stringent criteria outlined by the BIS.

A study carried out by Mishra on safety of storage water purifiers was commissioned by the NGO Healthy You Foundation. The study concluded that this market, especially the chemical purifier one, needs to be regulated.

S Krishnan, President of Healthy You Foundation, said the study had been sent to the Ministry of Health.
