Angioedema - Glossary



Glossary

Angioedema: Swelling of the mucous membranes, tissues beneath the skin, or an internal organ due to an allergic reaction.

Antibiotic: A drug used to treat infections caused by bacteria and other microorganisms.


Antihistamine: Drug used to offset the effects of histamine.

ACE Inhibitor: Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) A type of drug used to lower blood pressure.

Complete blood count: Standard set of measurements of the white blood cells and red blood cells.

Edema: The accumulation of fluid in part of the body.

Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR): This is a kind of blood test to detect Inflammation.

Histamine: A chemical released in the body during an allergic reaction, causing inflammation; also used in medical treatment, especially to dilate capillaries.

Subcutaneous: Beneath the skin.

Urticaria: Hives. Raised, itching areas of skin, often a sign of an allergic reaction. Also called "welts" or "nettle rash."
